Customers to benefit from NAB collaboration with AWS

NAB has extended its long-term agreement with Amazon Web Services (AWS) as part of its multi-cloud strategy that continues to bolster the bank’s technology capability to improve customer experiences.

The agreement will see NAB continue to accelerate the migration of key critical workloads to AWS cloud infrastructure and further develop its Generative AI (GenAI) capabilities – including automated code development and training.

NAB Group Executive Technology and Enterprise Operations, Patrick Wright, said NAB’s substantial investment in improving technology is focused on simplification and delivering improved customer experiences more quickly.

“NAB is making banking simpler and faster by strengthening our digital technology capabilities to ensure we can provide our colleagues and customers with world-class banking experiences,” Mr Wright said.

“We are one of the most advanced banks in the world for cloud adoption. This approach is powering our ability to deliver new and improved services to market more quickly for our customers, with added reliability. We also recognise AWS’s significant investments in highly secure and resilient global infrastructure to keep data safe, which NAB can leverage.

“There are several areas we continue to work closely with AWS on, including continued adoption of GenAI tools like Amazon Q Developer, alongside other improvements we are making to simplify how we work to boost productivity and speed of delivery to market,” he said.

“We have been a leader in delivering the very best training opportunities to our people, crucial to ensuring we’re supporting Australians with the skills they need for the future.

Since we set out on this journey in 2018, more than 3,360 NAB colleagues are now AWS Certified Cloud ‘Practitioners’ and many other organisations have implemented cloud education mirrored on NAB’s Tech Academy and Cloud Guild programs.”

AWS supports NAB’s GenAI program with tools including Amazon Q Developer for automated code generation that gives developers more time back to focus on the higher value work for customers, with more than 1,000 NAB technologists trained and using the tool.

AWS Director of Financial Services in Australia and New Zealand, Jamie Simon, said AWS is proud to play a key role in NAB’s ambition to deliver innovative digital experiences for customers.

I’m pleased to see NAB’s strong outcomes from Amazon Q Developer, which rank among the best in the world, with the majority of its engineers seeing improved productivity when using the coding assistant, showcasing the tangible benefits of our collaboration.”

The collaboration with AWS is a major investment and is another important step in continuing to embed NAB’s multi-cloud approach.

NAB’s digital channels including internet banking and the NAB Connect online business platform, as well as Simple Home Loans and the recent roll-out of Amazon Connect, AWS’s omnichannel cloud contact centre service, are some of NAB’s customer services being enabled by AWS.

NAB has been working closely with AWS since 2013 and this extension follows a 2022 agreement.

The details

  • NAB has successfully transitioned 84% of NAB’s on-premises infrastructure to a public multi-cloud environment.
  • Training for colleagues includes tailored enablement sessions and certification programs for NAB teams, for both technical and non-technical skill sets.
  • Upcoming GenAI programs include Amazon Bedrock and Amazon Q Developer training programs, as well as persona-based GenAI training programs for line of business executives.
