For many working parents, balancing the demands of a dynamic career with raising a young family can be a challenge.

Between work deadlines, school runs, swimming lessons and other family commitments, it’s understandable why many people might think twice before taking on a more senior role.

But for Katie and Cassie, joint Heads of Employment Legal at NAB, job sharing has provided the solution. “We’re in the most senior employment legal role in the bank. Taking on a role of this nature while also managing busy family lives meant we needed an arrangement that worked for us – and job-sharing provides that balance,” said Katie.

While job sharing isn’t new, it’s rare to see external candidates apply for a senior role as a package deal. After successfully job sharing at their previous employer, Katie and Cassie decided to pitch themselves to NAB together – with one cover letter and two CV’s.

“We’d never been through a job share interview process before, and neither had NAB!” Cassie recalls. “But from the start, the Talent team was open to trying something new”.

Anna Neraas, Talent Acquisition Consultant at NAB said working through this recruitment has been one of the proudest moments in her career.

“I haven’t seen anything like Cassie and Katie’s application in my 22 years of recruiting, I was very excited to see how this could work,” Anna said.

“We could tell early on they’d be both an asset to the bank and our colleagues”.

“Once I sold them on the role, Katie sold me on the benefits of having them both and how it worked in their previous employment”.

Both Cassie and Katie describe the recruitment process as a positive learning experience. “We spent the first half of the first interview talking through how the job share could work and the benefits for NAB,” Cassie said.

“And then about halfway through that first interview, they basically said great, you've sold us on the job share – we don’t need to talk about it anymore.”

The pair say there’s no model for the perfect job share arrangement, but agree, it’s a bit like a marriage.

They first met when Cassie came in to cover Katie’s parental leave at their previous employer.

“Cassie came in to cover my parental leave…and then she never left!” Katie said.

“We just we naturally became a partnership, collaborating, challenging each other, and making sure nothing fell through the cracks” .

Their story highlights the value of flexible working arrangements, not just for individuals but for organisations looking to attract and retain top talent.

“It’s about supporting each other to achieve work-life balance. We’re both genuinely invested in making this work, because it’s the best possible situation for us - and for the business. There’s no other way we could do a role like this at this stage in our lives.”
