National Australia Bank (NAB) is set to inspire high school students around Australia through its unique work experience program, Work Inspiration.

Over the past 3 days, 111 students from Sydney’s Lower North Shore participated in an action-orientated program to help them prepare for their future careers.

NAB is redesigning the traditional work experience program to inspire and add real value to young people, with benefits for both business and students. Work Inspiration is transforming the first career experience of students to ensure it is meaningful and ignites their enthusiasm for the world of work.

Students are given a preview of the working world and complete activities that help them think about the changing landscape of careers. They receive career insights and coaching from around 40 NAB employees and discover more about themselves in the process.

Rebecca Kotow, Head of Community Investment and Social Impact at NAB, said the program gives students an edge in an increasingly competitive job market, opening up crucial networks and uncovering opportunities.

“In order to thrive in a rapidly changing workforce, young people need access to coaches who are already engaged in meaningful work. Work Inspirations is a key part of our commitment to helping realise the potential of Australia’s young people. Its focus on meaningful opportunities demonstrates just how far we have evolved from the days where work experience consisted of fetching coffee and photocopying.”

“The response to the program has so far has been overwhelming, with the vast majority of students reporting that it has helped them think about their careers and inspired them to consider a broader range of opportunities” Ms Kotow said.

Robert Miller, Careers Teacher at North Sydney Boys High School said he was very excited that the school had been invited to participate in the program as it provides real and practical insights into the workforce.

“NAB’s Work Inspiration Program is the perfect introduction to the world of work for our year 10 students. Unlike many work experience situations, students have the opportunity to enjoy a structured and multi-faceted experience. Shadowing an employee of one of Australia’s leading financial institutions allows them to see the business as it really functions. Students form new networks and work on group projects together which is excellent for building teamwork, communication skills and confidence. The feedback from past participants in the program has been uniformly positive.” Mr Miller said.
