National Australia Bank’s headquarters has been rated Australia’s top performing workplace environment according to a new survey from two Sydney universities.

Sydney University and the University of Technology, Sydney produced the Building Occupant Satisfaction Survey Australia (BOSSA) which measured 60 Australian buildings’ overall performance from the occupants’ perspective.

The benchmarking survey asked employees to rate their satisfaction in terms of the building’s air quality, comfort, noise, temperature, connection to the outdoors, and its effect on their health and productivity.

NAB’s Group Executive People, Communications and Governance, Michaela Healey said the data ranked 700 Bourke Street in Melbourne’s Docklands number one across nine categories, placing NAB as the best workplace out of all the top-tier buildings surveyed.

“We’re delighted that we are supporting NAB’s employees to work more collaboratively and flexibly, with greater focus and with stronger performance and wellbeing outcomes,” she said.

“At NAB we want to create an environment that allows our people to bring their best to work, so that we can better serve our customers.

“As we reach the second anniversary of opening the building, it’s a great time to recognise how an innovative design and our commitment to flexible and agile working, has built a better workplace for our people and the environment.

“We also designed 700 Bourke Street with our customers in mind and more than 100 of our customers and community partners use our shared spaces each day.”

Lecturer in Architectural Science in the Faculty of Architecture, Design and Planning at Sydney University, Christhina Candido said the survey results were a great indicator of how well Australian buildings at the top-end of the market are performing.

“The results from the occupant survey conducted at 700 Bourke Street are without doubt remarkable,” she said.

“NAB’s headquarters topped nine out of 13 Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ) indicators: spatial comfort, individual space, indoor air quality, visual comfort, building image, productivity, work area comfort, building satisfaction, and health and maintenance.”

The 63,000 square metre A Grade commercial building, which has achieved a six Green Star rating, spans 16 levels and is home to more than 6,000 NAB employees.

The workplace design was the result of a collaborative alliance between NAB Cbus Property (developer), Woods Bagot (designer) and Brookfield Multiplex (builder).
